Filled with history, it gives you great-quality meat priced correctly—a no-frills, old-school classic. Stick to the steaks and chops, order a nice bottle of cabernet and enjoy the conversation with your friends or someone you love, and tell ’em Chef Rick sent you. They won’t know what you’re talking about, but you can’t go wrong if you stick with my recommendations. I was impressed by the amount of space they have for parking, a throwback to when there was nothing around them. New housing tracts surround the place now, but the parking area remains the same.
The Place for Steaks Since 1955

The lense of artist Catherine Opie captured something very different about Elizabeth Taylor and her home. Opie never met Elizabeth, but Elizabeth was an admirer of her work and invited her personally to photograph her home before and after Elizabeth’s hospitalization and eventual death in March 2011. Opie spent six months returning to the estate over and over again, taking over 3,000 photos, and then editing them down to 129 for the publication of her book,700 Nimes Road, published by Prestel.

We both had the dinner salad with crumbled blue cheese. This wood-paneled, ranch-style resto serves mesquite grilled steaks and seafood. Smoked Prime Rib, I accidentally used the butter knife instead of the steak knife. The tender meat yielded just as easily, and it took a few bites to notice my mistake. With the extra jus, the prime rib proved a luscious dish with a mild smoky flavor. Both of our entrees were cooked medium as requested.

Taylor died in 1969, but the Brentwood ranch, with its 12-bedroom house, guest quarters, rolling lawns and wooded hillsides, still bears his name. The estate, extensively remodeled in the 1980s by a rock-radio mogul who turned the stables into offices and apartments while leaving the horseshoe-studded stall doors intact, is slated to be sold at auction Nov. 30. Garlic cheese toast and soup or salad precede all dinners. Among entrée accompaniments, try our Ranch House potatoes; hash browns cooked with mushrooms and Monterey Jack, Cheddar, Parmesan and Fontina cheeses. Three blocks away on Encino Avenue is the house Walter Brennan built in 1934. Brennan, who played the cantankerous farmer with a limp in the television series “The Real McCoys,” chose an L-shaped design for the Spanish ranch house that was about 3,800 square feet.
The auction will take place on the grounds; pounding the gavel will be auctioneer Frank Trunzo of Tampa, Fla. That prospect rattles neighbors in the hillside zone, which is prone to floods and mudslides. During big storms, mud, debris and torrents of water gush off the hillsides. Residents argue that developing the ranch further could heighten risks to those downstream. Each potential bidder who has seen the property has had a different vision, it seems.

Most of the beer options are available in bottles, including Bud, Miller, Corona, and Foster’s, while Newcastle Brown Ale and Bud Light are available on tap. The Newcastle is a great deal at $3.50 a glass, and the dark, nutty flavor accentuated our beef quite well. The wine list focuses on major varietals that accompany strongly-flavored grilled meat dishes, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, but includes a range of other options to accompany any meal on the menu. There are several options by the glass, starting at the modest price of $4.50.
Inside, the Ranch House has the comfortable feel of a nice family restaurant. The open grill produces tantalizing smells as you walk into the main dining room. The front of the restaurant offers wonderful views of the sunset over the mountains and a large fireplace, two distinct advantages over the back section with its low ceiling. Memorabilia from Old Westerns provide interesting décor and contribute to the feeling of being thrown back in time. Nowhere in the establishment is gambling visible or audible.

But the experience is what I seek, and this is where you get the real deal. Dessert offerings ranged from a light Key Lime Pie to heftier offerings such as Tiramisu. The brownie was perfectly moist with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream.
The track’s 2018 six-pack of events will show off several enhancements the track has planned for the coming months as well. Racing fans can soon hear the magical sound of NASCAR cars screaming around Las Vegas Motor Speedway. LVMS grandstands and the Neon Garage will be open and available to the public free of charge, so fans can get an early racing fix roughly a month before the speedway’s March 2-4 NASCAR triple-header weekend. Antique saddles and Western movie posters still hang on the walls, and there’s little in the way of fancy tables, plates and silverware.
He always tried to welcome his regulars upon arrival (I would become one of those regulars). The ranch is widely accepted as the oldest operating restaurant in Las Vegas. Bob enjoyed life to the fullest, dying in 2010 at 87. Elvis Presley and Ann Margret were filmed there shooting skeet in the movie “Viva Las Vegas.” When Ann was filmed shooting, it was Bob breaking the targets just out of sight of the camera.
The First Baptist Church of Canoga Park bought the estate in 1961, and the three gabled houses that made up Burns’ crescent-shaped living quarters were turned into an elementary school. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans lived on Amestoy Avenue in Encino in a Spanish-style ranch home. The current owner of the house, Bienvenido Tan, said he occasionally still finds reminders of Rogers on the five-acre estate, including wagon wheels and horseshoes. Taylor was host and chief cook in those early party days, and even after he opened it up to the public in 1955.

The menu features a wide array of chicken, seafood, and, of course, steak. The halibut and salmon choices have the option of Cajun seasoning, and the scallop fettuccini is served with a Chardonnay cream sauce. Most of the meat, however, is unadorned by sauces. The steaks are helpfully available in two sizes, though, with all the sides, even the smaller, 12-oz. Mickey Rooney also lived in the Valley, but in a more grandiose style--in a 27-room hacienda on Densmore Avenue in Encino, with a white tile roof, bay windows and a large pool. The two-story house, built in the early 1940s, has five garages.
The ranch is a private Los Angeles enclave, surrounded by mature foliage and located at the end of a long driveway. In Hollywood, stars buy and sell homes often, rarely living in the same one for too long. But there was something special about 700 Nimes Road that appealed to Elizabeth. The silver screen icon purchased the home in 1981 and lived there until her death at age 79 in 2011.
The 7,000-square-foot home is a 1960s style ranch house and sits on 1.27 acres. It consists of 6 bedrooms, including two master suites, and 6 bathrooms. It’s the former home of Nancy Sinatra Sr. (Frank Sinatra’s daughter).
